House Detersan - The Redwater Tides

[edit | edit source]

Matron Mother: Essyla Detersan

Favored Consort: Loamm

Population: 12-15,000, 99% drow

The largest of the four houses, Detersan is headed by Matron Essyla Detersan, who rules her province with an iron fist. Detersan is the most territorial and warlike house, and has the largest military fleet in this region of the Underdark. However, they have not taken over the entire enclave because of Essyla’s sister, Oriana, who defected from House Detersan to rule House Komath after the former matron was killed in the ongoing Detersan-Komathian push for territory.

Detersan borders the Descent to the west, the Balsyoth Peaks to the north, House Komath to the east, and the artificial boundary approaching the Drow Road to the south. The dwarves know the most about its land features as they, or the duergar more specifically, often trade with the inhabitants of Delindwynnen, and Zakano lies above Jirefeln along the western border of the province. Most notably are the karsts to the north, where the monastic Daughters of Lolth reside. Further south lies the Clearwater Lake, and beyond that is

House Detersan are also known as the Redwater Tides, which is a reference to a battle with the dwarves around 600 years ago. The battle took place on and around Clearwater Lake as the dwarves attempted to seize an important vein of mithril ore, knowing that the drow would use it to create their dark armor. The drow decimated the dwarves, bleeding their corpses into the lake and creating the “red water” they are known for now.

House Komath - The Shield of Webs

[edit | edit source]

Matron Mother: Oriana Komath

Favored Consort: None

Population: 8-10,000. ~90% drow

House Komath is best known as a house built by bastards. More specifically, Komath is considered a “stew house” in that it contains many drow from different houses, who renounced their former families to be a part of this one. Komath is also well known for housing non-drow as well, and is arguably the most “good” of the four houses. That said, not much is known about its land features. It borders Detersan to the west, the Balsyoth Peaks to the north, the Great Divide to the west, and the Drow Road to the south. It is believed that there is an extensive mushroom forest within its borders, likely to the north, as traders staying in Komatha report extensive mushroom varieties in the local dishes.

Komath is known for being a protector, both for itself and for the other houses. It boasts an impressive army, and when the houses must band together against a common enemy, it is House Komath that is there on the ground till the last woman. Because of this, Komath are often used as the guards on the Drow Road.

House Revolka - The Green-Eyed Witches

[edit | edit source]

Matron Mother: Sidee Revolka

Favored Consort: Tybal, Restonne, and Vocar

Population: 4-6,000, 99% drow

House Revolka is definitely the strangest of the four houses of the Northern Enclave. Its inhabitants lie within the Gully, a depression in the Basin caused when the Sibilant Sea receded ages ago. Revolka are highly reclusive, deeply embedded in studying the weave and suffusing themselves in the arcane and occult. Most of the arachnomancers come from here, and when a mage is required, they are sent from House Revolka. It is believed that many of the drow in this house have allied themselves with the illithid to the west, trading knowledge and gaining power in both directions.

House Koren - The Watchful Eye

[edit | edit source]

Matron Mother: Risa Koren

Favored Consort: Molynnen

Population: 1-2,000, 99% drow

House Koren was once one of the oldest houses in the Northern Enclave, but was toppled roughly 60 years ago, and most of its citizens killed, after a skirmish with the Iron Pikes of northern Teveren turned into a short, brutish war. Now, Risa Koren, remaining daughter of former Matron Wyll Koren, seeks to rebuild the house. Very little is known about this place other than the locations described by survivors of the war, and even those descriptions are mostly of Old Koren, which is little more than a ruin now.

It is said that House Koren is nearly extinct and that its members are weak, but it is also said that House Koren holds some of the most exotic and powerful magical artifacts in the entire Enclave, if not the entire Underdark. This, coupled with its difficult-to-access location and its proximity to Bhalkannathor, makes it mostly off limits to the other houses; even House Detersan’s massive gunships have been blown out of the sky by strange powers there.

Risa’s mother is Galvina.
