The Churning Depths (or just The Depths) are an immense, ever-changing megadungeon located beneath the ziggurat known as God's Eye, in the city of Cazbolar in Avra. The Depths have become one of the primary prisons for the worst criminals in Avra and other countries in southern Iro, with much ado made about fighting the various monsters that live deep below (mostly to keep them from reaching the surface). Entrance to the Depths is considered a death sentence, as the immense gate is magically sealed, opened only through holy ritual, and once inside, it is only a matter of time before some creature finds and kills those delving. Near the entrance through the sloping cavernous tunnel is a pseudo-city known as Depton (Depthtown), itself the underground dungeon of God's Eye. Most inhabitants of the Depths remain here as the terrain is stable and unshifting. Over 2,000 individual layers of the Churning Depths have been mapped over the years, by those who have managed to return to Depton after delving. None of those layers look alike. It is believed, out of the mapped layers, the actual depth that inhabitants have delved is 15-20 layers. The only known possible mechanism for the churning terrain is the titular God's Eye, an oculus at the top of the ziggurat. The eye is roughly 50ft in diameter and made of a thick, strong faceted amber crystal. On a full moon, the moonlight filters through the crystal, hitting a mirror within which sends the beam of light down the Drunkard's Wail, a hole in the center of Depton with seemingly no bottom (no relation to the Yawning Portal). The light seems to activate some sort of mechanism or magical construction that changes the layers of the Depths, causing the entire undergound to quake. Despite this, the Churning Depths tend to change more often than this light activation, thus calling the reason behind God's Eye into question. Some believe the light is from the Mother, Midya, quelling the wrath of some giant, dangerous monstrosity deep below. Many scholars thought this to be the infamous Tarrasque, before it erupted from under Wodesville in Dorian. [[Category:Places]] [[Category:Iro]] [[Category:Avra]]
